Domestic Violence is a serious problem that can cause great harm to Victim and their families

Restraining Order: If you face threats or harm, a restraining order can be issued for your protection. It is a legal document, issued by a judge which clearly outlines specific actions the other person is prohibited from doing.

There are two statutes of restraining order in Ontario Family Law.

  • The Family Law Act

  • The Children’s Law Reform Act


There are Several Types of Restraining Orders: 

No contact orders, Conditional contact, Location Restrictions, Prohibition from possession of firearm, Stay Away Order.


There are two primary routes to acquiring a restraining order within the family law system.

Independent Application and Motion brought within ongoing family law proceedings.
